air duct cleaning in Kansas City, KS

What the job looks like in a Wyandotte County house

We start in the basement, not at the registers. Trunk lines get traced, branch count gets written down, and the return path gets found before anything is cut. Supply and return openings are sealed off. A vacuum is tied into the main trunk to pull the system negative. Each run is agitated with brushes or air whips, one branch at a time, debris moving toward the vacuum. Access ports are patched and sealed when we leave.

Kansas City, KS holds the oldest housing in our service area. Pre-1940 frame homes in Strawberry Hill, Armourdale and Argentine were often converted off coal or gravity octopus furnaces. That leaves huge sheet metal trunks sized for a dead system. Joints often carry old tape from the asbestos era. We do not scrape, sand or cut that tape. It gets photographed and left alone, and testing is the homeowner's next call.

Panned joist returns are the other local habit. The framing cavity becomes the duct. In a damp unfinished basement that pulls musty air and joist grit straight to the blower.

River bottomland humidity, rail yard and I-70/I-635 road soot keep returns loaded. If a window-unit retrofit left the duct undersized, cleaning helps airflow a little, not enough. We will say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

My house in Strawberry Hill still has the big sheet metal trunks from the old octopus furnace. Can those even be cleaned?

Yes, and they're usually the ducts that need it most. When a coal or gravity furnace gets swapped for forced air, the original oversized trunks typically stay in place. Air moves through them slowly, so decades of dust settles on the bottom instead of being carried along. We clean them through access points cut into the trunk and sealed afterward. One caution: on pre-1940 systems we frequently find old tape and joint wrap from the asbestos era. We don't disturb or remove that material. If we see it, we stop at that joint and tell you what we found so you can have it tested before anyone works on it.

Why does the air coming out of my vents smell like the basement?

That's one of the most common calls we get in Wyandotte County, and it's usually the return side rather than the supply. A lot of older homes here use panned joist returns, where the space between two floor joists is closed off with sheet metal and used as a duct. That cavity isn't sealed the way real ductwork is, so it pulls air straight out of an unfinished, damp basement and sends it through the house. Cleaning the return removes the accumulated dust the smell is clinging to, but if the basement moisture isn't dealt with too, the odor tends to drift back. We'll tell you honestly which part of it cleaning will fix.
