What furnace cleaning actually involves

Power goes off at the service switch and the breaker. The gas valve gets shut. Doors come off, then the burner assembly is unbolted and pulled. Burner ports get brushed and vacuumed. The flame sensor is scuffed clean with an abrasive pad, not sandpaper. The inducer wheel and pressure switch ports are checked for lint. On condensing units the trap and drain line get flushed. Then the blower.

The blower wheel is where most of the dirt lives. Each fin collects a gray felt of silt. Loaded fins stop moving air, so the furnace runs longer and the limit trips. Pulling the wheel out of the housing is the real labor in this job.
